Authentic Southern Sweet Potato Pies, Made with Love

In her bustling Southern kitchen, Snookie would bake dozens of pies during the holidays, each one crafted by instinct rather than recipe. Her perfectly spiced sweet potato pies became legendary among family and friends, who would place their orders well in advance to secure their holiday tradition.

The Best Sweet Potato Pies

My grandmother, Evelyn Dixon, known as “Snookie” to many, made the best sweet potato pies. She was the youngest girl of eleven siblings, born and raised in Marietta Georgia. Out of all her siblings, the family preferred her pies.

"You Know What it’s Supposed to Taste Like”

Once I moved away from Ohio and had my own family, I called my grandmother before  Thanksgiving one year and asked her to please teach me how to make the pies. She gave me some measurements off the top of her head and then said the most empowering thing to me. “Start from there and taste it, then add what you need, you know what it’s supposed to taste like.” She trusted my instinct. I kept making those pies until I had that Snookie pie taste.

Keeping her Legacy Alive

Last year my husband asked me to make pies for the Black History program at this job. The pies were a success, and a coworker asked and suggested that I sell the pies. That was it for me. I knew I needed to step out there and do it! She was such a “people person”, and this is the best way to keep her legacy alive. So, here we are stepping into selling Snookie’s pies.
